AMERICAN POP (1981)
|
WHAT IT'S ABOUT |
AMERICAN POP follows the descendants of one man's dream to entertain others through music, "It's all about the music," and how they leave their children a legacy of music. Each man is plagued by drugs and a need to make music even if it kills them, literally.

If this sounds like a good film so far..imagine your surprise when I tell you that this is a animated film! Yes. Animated - a cartoon movie with stunning lifelike animation. Each movement is so fluid and follows the real movements a person makes. Nothing static in this film although it is a bit over-dramatic in some cases to create excitement in the scenes. Anyone who knows movies or animation will recognize the person responsible for this masterpeice - Ralph Bakshi of LORD OF THE RINGS, COOL WORLD, FIRE & ICE fame.
I have nothing bad to say here. I saw a preview for this when I rented FIFTH ELEMENT last night and when I saw it at the video store tonight, I rented it. As far as I know, this is the first time on video ever. This isn't like other cartoon films - here we have sex, drugs and rock & roll. Swearing is heard here but it is not senseless. It is found in scenes that move the film forward and do not impair it at all. This isn't Disney, folks - this is real life as only Ralph Bakshi could present it.
"Fuck the words! The words don't mean anything! It's all about the music!" Tell that to the lyricist - the guy who makes the songs possible. Instrumentals are nice, but the music is just the sugar coating - the words are the medicine that can heal a person.

If you're a music fan or a fan of well made animation, then this is a must-see! The soundtrack is phenomenal as well with Jefferson Starship, Jimi Hendrix, Sam Cooke, Janis Joplin, Bob Seger and more!!
